THE BEST SPIES IN CINEMA AS RATED BY OUR TEAM

July 11, 2019

To celebrate the launch of our new escape experience, our team have put together a list of their top ten favourite spies in cinema. In Trapped Undercover, you step into the world of espionage as an MI6 Intelligence Agent on the hunt for a dangerous double agent. Pick your alias and experience an immersive spy-hunt experience unlike any other. Let our team’s top ten picks inspire your character.

10. Napoleon Solo & Illya Kuryakin

In Guy Ritchie’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E., it’s hard to choose between CIA Agent Napoleon Solo and KGB Operative Illya Kuryakin. That’s why these spies have tied in 10th in our list of Top Ten Spies in Cinema. An unlikely partnership, the pair traverse through 1960s Italy with fashion, whisky and lots of action. It’s a film that will leave you wanting a holiday and wanting a sequel. While we’re still waiting for a sequel with more adventures of Solo and Kuryakin, we can appreciate their spycraft on this list.

9. George Smiley

George Smiley, an intelligence officer from The Circus, has been portrayed in three films. A sort of anti-James Bond, George Smiley is more tempered, calculating and unassuming. But like James Bond, George Smiley has been translated from fiction novels to screen. You won’t find Smiley enjoying martinis at a bar, but we’re sure you could trust him with the nation’s security.

8. Jack Ryan

We’ll be honest, we’re not sure if it’s Jack Ryan’s work in espionage that we love or the fact that so many faces have portrayed him in cinema. Jack Ryan actors’ include such famous faces as Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, Chris Pine and Alec Baldwin. Plus, John Krasinski in the TV show!

7. Bridget von Hammersmark

Maybe we’re a bit biased but, here at Trapped, we love a good undercover story. And who has one better than Bridget von Hammersmark? A double agent working for Great Britain, she hides behind being a famous actor. It might be that acting ability that makes her such a good spy, either way she’s definitely one of our favourites. Catch her in Inglourious Basterds if you haven't already!

6. Bryan Mills

This spy has a very particular set of skills... A set of skills that has carried him through 3 movies as of 2019. It’s hard to believe that retired CIA Agent Bryan Mills has been on our screens for 11 years. Following a path of danger and destruction, Bryan Mills finds himself caught up in human trafficking with his kidnapped daughter in Taken. And then wife in Taken 2... He really can't catch a break. With the first film in the franchise being a team favourite, we had to add this badass dad to our list of our favourite spies!

5. Ethan Hunt

If you’re like us, you can’t think about Mission Impossible without getting the theme tune stuck in your head. Ethan Hunt is definitely the action man of espionage with his stunts, high-stakes missions and catchy theme tune. What more could a spy want? With six films spanning more than two decades, IMF Agent Ethan Hunt is a staple in spy-cinema.

4. Austin Powers

Austin Danger Powers, who doesn’t love a spy whose middle name is literally danger? Powers is the comedic answer to all those super-serious spy films. Cryogenically frozen, he wakes up in the 90s to a gas shortage and a flock of seagulls, and, of course, to save the world from his nemesis Doctor Evil. All that and he’s the author of Swedish-Made Penis Enlarger Pumps: (This sort of thing is my bag, baby!).

3. Jason Bourne

Another book to screen character, Jason Bourne is a spy you wouldn’t want to get on the bad side of. Amnesia? Check. Survives more gunshots than humanly possible? Check. Dangerous? Definitely check. This CIA Assassin comes with quite the tragic backstory (as every good spy does) and franchise power with Matt Damon portraying the spy in 4 Bourne films.

2. Harry Hart & Eggsy Unwin

Like The Man From U.N.C.L.E., we couldn’t pick just one spy from the Kingsman franchise. Coming in at shared second, our team have picked Harry Hart and Eggsy Unwin. If you’ve read our blog on our Top Ten Zombie Films, you’ll know that we’re pretty biased to anything London-centric. Gentleman spy, Harry Hart, and his protege, Eggsy Unwin, showcase some of the best gadgets in spy-cinema (rocket launcher in a briefcase, anyone?), over the top storylines and unforgettable fight scenes.

1. James Bond

Coming in at number one, it’ll be no surprise we have the OG of spy-cinema, James Bond himself. With more than 20 movies, 7 actors portraying him, and nearly 60 years in cinema, 007 is probably the most famous spy in the world. While that’s probably not a good thing for a real spy, James Bond is still going strong over half a century later, so we think he’s earned the title. Whether you’re a fan of the classics with Sean Connery, or you like Daniel Craig’s blond Bond, there’s a lot to choose from in the series. And more coming! Bond 25 is expected in cinemas in 2020.

Now that you've had inspiration about your Trapped Undercover alias, it's time to book your tickets to our newest experience from Trapped Escape Rooms. See if you can locate the double agent in your ranks before the time runs out, then treat yourself to a well-earned martini; shaken, not stirred.
